Life Sharing

Through Life Sharing, families, friends, or other community members invite and welcome a person into their home to live in a shared, supportive environment. Mainstay has provided Life Sharing for more than 25 years, and today it is experiencing tremendous growth.

Life Sharing
for Adults

Life Sharing is a residential program that enables people with intellectual disabilities and autism to join an individual or family in their home, as a fully participating member. This long-term living situation promotes choice and community integration. Life Sharing partnerships benefit both the person supported and the service provider as they enjoy sharing life experiences and responsibilities, and building mutual relationships.

Meet Elijah & Aleta

As the pandemic grew in 2020, Elijah and his mom Aleta found themselves without their support team. It was then that Aleta found Mainstay. She was encouraged to apply to support Elijah through our Community Services programs, and in 2023, their partnership transitioned to Life Sharing.

Who is Eligible?

The general definition of a child with a medically complex condition is a person aged 0 through 21 with a chronic health condition that affects three or more organ systems. The child requires medically necessary skilled nursing intervention to execute medical regimens to use technology for respiration, nutrition, medication administration, or other bodily functions. Mainstay launched this service in 2023; some of the families supported are experiencing the joy of living at home together for the first time.

Life Sharing for Children

When a child has a medically complex condition, a relative may need to forego employment to provide them with intense support. Life Sharing for Children with Medically Complex Conditions has become an option for some. Through this program, the care provider can be reimbursed for the support they provide. In 2023, Mainstay became the first provider in Western PA to become qualified to offer this service.
